In Japan, the spring comes in April. The weather becomes warm and snow melts. It is the season with beautiful flowers in full bloom everywhere. I guess you never include snow as a part of spring, right? Now, what we are going to introduce must be beyond your imagination of spring!
Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is a mountain sightseeing route in Toyama prefecture. There you can enjoy splendid snowscapes including the very famous snow wall.
Tateyama Kurobe is in a mountainous area in Toyama prefecture
Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is a mountain sightseeing route connecting Toyama prefecture and Nagoya prefecture. It is situated in a narrow gap between two high mountains. The temperature there at such high altitude is much lower than that at ground level, so there is still a lot of accumulated snow even when spring comes, and it looks more like in winter than in spring.
It takes you approximately 2.5 hours in total to get there from Tokyo, first by plane, then by bus. Let’s go back to the winter!
The Snow Wall Walk is a top recommendation!
Speaking of visiting Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route in spring, no one should miss the most recommended snow wall! This area is closed during winter every year, for the reason of being particularly snowy, and being dangerous for travellers to hike. From mid-April, the area is open to public by plowing a road through the snow. The snow wall left at the two sides after plowing is called “Yuki-no-Otani”, the snow wall we refer to in this article. It becomes a very famous tourist spot, and the Snow Wall Walk there is a must-do activity!
The snow wall there is so giant that it is much higher than a bus, as you can see in the photo above. Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is the only place where you can enjoy such unique and impressive scenery!
Start your Snow Wall Walk after getting off the bus! While you are walking along the snow wall, don’t forget to put your hands on the wall and see how high you can reach. Let’s touch the nature and feel how powerful it is. Do take photos to record this memorable moment!
Enjoy the extra wide snowscape from the top!
Now, get back to the bus and go on to the next destination. The highland bus drives you to an incredible location which overlooks Midagahara highland with lovely snow as a natural decoration for it. It is described as “snow make-up” in Japanese. Here you can enjoy a magnificently wide view which is very different from the snow wall.
A stunning pond covered with snow, at the top of Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route
You can reach Murodo, the highest point of Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, again by the highland bus. Mikuri pond is highly praised for its extraordinary beauty. The peaceful pond reflects clearly the surrounding mountains covered with snow, like a mirror does! You can enjoy such an enchanting scenery only in this season. Seize the chance! If the temperature goes further lower, it is possible to see another valuable scenery – the surface of the pond freezes and it looks like glass!
Chance to meet Ptarmigan, a Natural Monument of Japan
Besides snow, Tateyama Kurobe is also known as a place to meet Ptarmigans! Ptarmigan, a very rare bird species, is designated by the government as one of the Natural Monuments, one category of the Cultural Properties of Japan, and thus is a protected species. In the old times, Ptarmigans were thought to be sacred messengers of God, so the Japanese people respect them very much. Something good will happen if you chance to meet them!
